How to Shop Tax-Free in Japan
Japan offers an excellent tax-free shopping program for temporary visitors (tourists staying less than 6 months). To qualify for the tax exemption, follow these steps:
Minimum Purchase: You must spend over 5,000 JPY (excluding tax) at the same store on the same day. Using our calculator, that means if you enter a "Tax-Free Price", it must be 5000 or above.
Bring Your Passport: Stores require your physical passport with the entry stamp (or QR code from Visit Japan Web) to process the tax exemption. Copies are not accepted.
Consumables vs. General Goods: Cosmetics, food, and medicine (consumables) will be sealed in a special bag. Do not open the bag while inside Japan, or you may be charged the tax upon departure. General goods (electronics, clothes) can be used while in Japan.
